Join Friends of Merrymeeting Bay (FOMB) as we continue our Outside! 2014 series with an evening paddle around Little Swan Island on Wednesday, August 13th from 5:00-7:00pm. This is a fantastic opportunity for intermediate to advanced paddlers to meet other area paddlers and explore the upper part of Merrymeeting Bay. This event is free and open to the public.

Nestled along the eastern side of Swan Island in the Kennebec River, Little Swan Island is a well-established bald eagle nesting site and an important archaeological site. It also hosts some of the prettiest paddling in the Bay area. It is part of the Steve Powell Wildlife Management Area, which also includes Swan Island, and is administered by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.

Along the way, paddlers will pass Dresden Falls, a parcel recently acquired by FOMB and the Maine Historic Preservation Commission. This multi-year project protected one of Maine’s premier archaeological sites.

Led by guide Warren Whitney, participants will meet at the Swan Island ferry landing just north of the Richmond Town Landing. If time permits, the group will circumnavigate the island. Participants must bring their own boat and personal flotation device.

Pre-registration is required with trip leader Warren Whitney at 666-3376. You can share the event on Facebook here.
