Friends of Merrymeeting Bay (FOMB) hosts an evening Mushroom Walk led by local mycologist Michaeline Mulvey on Thursday, August 18th at 6:00pm in Dresden. This free all-ages event is open to the public and families are encouraged to attend.

The Maine woods are a veritable goldmine for wild mushrooms, the fruiting bodies of our native fungi. New England’s weather conditions create excellent habitat for these spore-bearing organisms, many of which are easy to identify. Some species are edible and some contain a multitude of medicinal qualities. With only 5% of the world’s 1.5 million estimated fungi species identified, there is much to be explored in the world of mushrooms.

President and Director of the Maine Mycological Society, Michaeline Mulvey will lead this foray on property protected in large part by FOMB over five years and containing the most significant prehistoric archaeological site in Maine. The property also has the largest stand of the rare plant spongy arrowhead, in Merrymeeting Bay. Participants will meet in Dresden (detailed directions will be given upon required pre-registration) and are encouraged to wear good walking shoes. Attendees should bring a collection basket, and a knife and are welcome to bring mushrooms from home for show and tell or for help with identification. Please register for this outing with Ed Friedman at 666-3372

The next outing in FOMB’s Outside! series will be an evening paddle around Little Swan Island on Tuesday, August 23rd from 5:30-7:30. Leading this circumnavigation is Warren Whitney, formerly the Executive Director of FOMB and currently Land Trust Program Manager, at Maine Coast Heritage Trust. Paddlers must bring their own boat and PFD and possess at least intermediate paddling skills.
